For two days I’ve tried to forget about the kiss with Pike. I’ve tried to scrub it from my mind, erase it with new memories, anything to make it go away.

But it sits there, haunting me.

One kiss destroyed me.

Since then I’ve tried to be every bit the doting fiancée to try and make up for what I did. Including making him his favorite breakfast on a weekday.

“Why is your phone locked?” Caleb asks as he enters the kitchen with my phone in hand.

I scrunch my brow at him. “Why do you have my phone?”

“Why is it locked?”

“Because I was with clients who had a grabby-hands toddler yesterday,” I say, but it’s only a partial truth. There was a toddler playing with my phone, but there was also the guilt that infested me after texting with Pike.

“You have a text.”

“Yeah?” I take the phone from him and unlock it, noticing how he looks over my shoulder at the text. There’s a message from my pickiest client making sure I search for the correct fabric later today. “Why can’t some people just let me design? If they want to be involved with every little minute detail, why don’t they do it themselves?” I vent in frustration as I let the phone drop a few inches down to the counter top.

“When will breakfast be done?” Caleb asks, his curiosity seeming to have been satisfied.

I glance over to the timer. “About ten minutes give or take.”

“Okay, I’ll be back,” he says and leans in, placing a kiss on my cheek.

I watch as he leaves, listen for his footsteps on the stairs, before picking the phone back up and looking at the other message.

Can we talk? Coffee? - Pike

I stare at the message on my screen. I’ve avoided Pike, altered my running route and time so that I don’t bump into him.

No - Aubrey

I set the phone down and continue with breakfast, but it’s seconds later when my phone goes off again. A whole lot of coffee is going to be needed for this day, I can just tell.

I’m not sorry I kissed you - Pike

The words nearly cause me to spit my coffee out. Thankfully Caleb is still upstairs.

Don’t bring up that mistake again - Aubrey

It wasn’t a mistake. Never a mistake - Pike

My fingers fly over the letters, the sound of footsteps on the stairs driving me.

Stop. Just stop - Aubrey

Don’t message me about this again - Aubrey

Panic has me rushing around the kitchen to set Caleb’s plate, then my own, before he makes it back into the kitchen. He smiles as he sits down and digs in.

“I have a meeting with Pike this afternoon at the Carmel house,” Caleb says.

Thankfully I’m not mid-sip again, but I am half bite and I pause for a beat before resuming chewing.

“I thought that house was all settled.”

“Other issues have come up and I need him to look at something. You should bring your layouts, see what he thinks.”

I nod. “Sounds good.”

“Good breakfast, babe,” he says before pressing a kiss to my lips.
